The gallery is very interested in receiving applications from artists at any time. However, as we receive such high numbers of enquiries from artists, we are unable to meet requests from artists wishing to meet with our programming team (this consists of the Director, Exhibition Curators, Education and Marketing staff), and therefore ask that all artists wishing to enquire about exhibiting at The New Art Gallery Walsall, submit a proposal or information about them and their practice.

The programming team meet roughly every other month to review proposals. Please not that The New Art Gallery Walsall does not acknowledge the receipt of proposals and will only contact artists after the work has been considered and a decision made. The New Art Gallery Walsall will respond by letter as soon as possible when a decision has been made.

Frequently Asked Questions about Proposals:

Am I eligible to apply for a residency in the Artists’ Studio and what format do the residencies take?

The Artists’ Studio programme focuses on artists – predominately though not exclusively – who are connected with the West Midlands region and who have already built up a growing record of practice. The residencies offer time, space and support for artists to create new work in purpose built studio space positioned within the heart of the gallery building.

Resident artists are encouraged to respond to the gallery and its environment, and to explore innovative ways of engaging with its diverse audiences.  Through the residency programme, The New Art Gallery Walsall is also able to expand the range of artists and contemporary art practices accessible to visitors and to provide opportunities to artists whose practices may be best understood within this context: for example, site-specific, process-led, socially-engaged, performance-based, or net-based practices.

The Artists’ Studio is located on the first floor of the gallery and is fully equipped with internet and telephone access, a sink and lockable storage cupboards. Artists also have access to office facilities and equipment and reference materials housed within the gallery’s Art Library.  Each residency takes place over a period three months and three to four projects take place per year.
